Background Information
National Federation of PBOs

The National Federation of Public Benefits Organizations popularly known as PBOs Federation is established under section 21 of the Public benefits Organizations Act 2013 as an umbrella organization of ALL registered PBOs and self-regulation forums. The functions of the PBOs Federation include promoting self-regulation, coordinating and monitoring the self-regulation forums registered under the PBO Act.

The National Federation of PBOs Strives to:

Galvanizing development sector, strengthening of the voluntary sector, for promotion of organized civic action, and to promote collective PBOs and civil society action, based on mutual understanding, respect and knowledge.

Provide proactive leadership in policy and national issues and lobby government for enabling legislation and good governance:

Establishment of the Federation

(1) There shall be established a Federation to be known as the Public Benefit Organizations which shall, be a collective forum of all Public Benefit Organizations registered under this Act. (2) The Federation shall adopt its own structure, rules and procedures for the efficient administration of its activities: The Federation should have a code of conduct and such other regulations as may facilitate self-regulation by Public Benefit Organizations on matters of activities, funding programs, foreign affiliations, national security, and training the development of national manpower, institutional building, scientific and technological development and other matters as may be of national interest.

  • Provide overall leadership to the PBOs sector and civil society as a whole.
  • Champion the values of probity, transparency, accountability, justice and good governance.
  • Mandated to present all its members.
  • Enhance self-regulation to its members and the adherence to the rule of law.
  • Assist them to realize their potential in providing services that improve the social economic status of the Kenyan society in pursuit of sustainable development and a just and equitable society regardless of gender, race, nationality, religious or any other inclination.

1. Provide leadership on matters of interest to the sector and for the promotion of the sector.
2. Promote self-regulation by the forums for self-regulation of public benefit organization.
3. Co-ordinate the self-regulation forums registered under this part.
4. Monitor the performance of the self-regulation forums and advise the Authority in the monitoring and enforcement of compliance by these forums and their respective PBOs members with the provisions of this Act, the regulations and the general code of conduct adopted by the self regulation forums.
5. Advise the Authority generally on the development of the public benefit organization sector.
6 . Facilitate the building of the capacity of non-governmental organizations for the enhancement of the effective of these organizations.
7. Render such advice to donors and the Authority on any issues relating to the sector.

The membership is drawn from the registered PBOs in Kenya, both locally and internationally.

The Members are encouraged to file returns with The National Federation of PBOs, comply with necessary regulations and pay necessary annual subscriptions to the Membership Body.

The PBOs Federation coverage has been divided into 9 regions in Kenya divided as follows.

THE NATIONAL FEDERATION OF PBOS LEADERSHIP STRUCTURE
The Council has the following operational committees

1 NATIONAL EXECUTIVE MEMBERS
Executive Committee /Directors (National Chairman,Vice-chairperson and 12 Regional Representatives).

The leadership is expected to by example and work with the PBOs Coordination Board and other stakeholders to steer the PBO/CSO sector forward.
